Care tips

The basics of a happy dog.

Good care doesn't have to be complicated. These simple habits cover most of what a dog needs. For anything specific to your dog, your vet is the best guide.

01

Feeding

  • Choose a complete food made for your dog's age and size.
  • Feed at the same times each day; most adults do well with two meals.
  • Keep fresh water out at all times.
  • Go easy on treats, which should be no more than about a tenth of daily food.
  • Never feed chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or anything with xylitol.

Exercise & play

  • Most dogs need 30 minutes to 2 hours of activity a day, depending on breed and age.
  • Mix walks with play: fetch, tug, and hide-and-seek all count.
  • Let them sniff, since exploring smells tires the brain as much as running tires the legs.
  • Puzzle feeders and short training sessions keep clever dogs out of mischief.
  • On hot days, walk early or late and watch for heavy panting.

Grooming

  • Brush a few times a week, or daily for long or thick coats.
  • Bathe only when needed, with a shampoo made for dogs.
  • Trim nails every few weeks; if they click on the floor, they're too long.
  • Check ears weekly for redness or a bad smell.
  • Brushing teeth, even a few times a week, helps prevent dental disease.

Health

  • Visit the vet once a year for a check-up, or twice for seniors.
  • Keep vaccines and flea, tick, and worm prevention up to date.
  • Spaying or neutering has health benefits; ask your vet about timing.
  • Watch for changes in appetite, energy, thirst, or toilet habits.
  • Microchip your dog and keep your contact details current.
